I'd definitely skip the stats book (though I'd love to read it) graphs and charts make proofreading a nightmare.

Please don't be shy about talking with us when you're curious about things. (smile) I'm glad you're asking about scanning textbooks. They are a little different from scanning novels in that they often have sidebars, pictures, graphs, and tables. It might help to know what subject of books you plan to scan. What program will you be using for scanning your books? If you are using Kurzweil, this is one time I'd suggest setting it to save the images of pages you scan so you can re-recognize them with different recognition settings if needed. I'm thinking of the detection of columns here. Most of the book may need to be scanned with column detection turned on, but an individual page may need column detection turned off to read correctly. My experience is that books about history, psychology, literature, and political science are easier to scan. Math and advanced science books seem to be the most difficult. I'm not sure I'd even try to scan a geometry book.
