I also think that reviews from people whom we learn have tastes similar to our own can help a lot. Is there some place where we can list our favorite authors/books in a profile like thing that others can search to find kindred individuals? I'm thinking, if I had such a profile, one could search on William Faulkner or Toni Morrison or Hunter S. Thompson and find me and the additional authors who would find their way onto my list. I find that people who enjoy Toni Morrison also tend to enjoy Faulkner, Eudora Welty and other writers of the southern school (Truman Capote, Harper Lee, etc.). Thus, if they have just finished "Light in August" and are looking for something similar, they can search for Faulkner and find that people who read him also enjoy William Styron for instance. It's just a thought. cdh Chris Hofstader CUNY, BSO, ATG, Odds and Ends email: cdh@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Blog: http://www.blindconfidential.blogspot.com Skype: BlindChristian phone: 727-896-6393 -----Original Message----- From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Bob Sent: Tuesday, May 27, 2008 9:25 AM To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: a newby question Wow E, talk about past history. The message you are replying to must have been my second or third message to the list. I remember looking at the story of civilization book something or other, and consulting with you. You politely recommended that a newbie should start with another book, which I did. Thanks for the advice. Since that time I've written short and long synopses and several reviews. I think reviewing a book is an underused tool that we readers have. How many times have I downloaded books to discover that it really isn't my kind of read? If more books had readers' reviews we could all learn by other people's mistakes, or, in the case of a good book, someone else's serendipitous good luck.
