Hi all. Note that I have only tested these with Word 2000 so I can't
comment if they work on other Word versions or not. Also these tips aren't
always 100% reliable so use at your own risk, but if the book gets too
screwed up you can always undo. I always save both the original zip file I
download from the step 1 page as well as the unzipped rtf file just in case
of accidents.
First, a common problem with some submitters is that there are no page
breaks. They are section breaks instead. So you need to change the
section breaks to page breaks. To do this, go into the "find and replace"
dialogue. In Word 2000, you hit Alt, E, E. In the find box, put this as
shown:
^b
In the replace box, put this as shown:
^m
Hit "Replace all." If you're lucky, a dialogue pops up right away and says
that Word made X replacements. If you are unlucky, it will take a very
long time and you will get several thousand pages that shouldn't be
there. I have no idea why it works perfectly sometimes and bombs others,
but when it works, it works well.
Here is another tip. I know that the above tip has been shared on this
list before, but I think this tip is new. It is a quick way to repair
split words with hyphens. Again, go to the find and replace
dialogue. Search for the following:
-^l
For the replace, just leave it empty. That takes out the dash and line
break, so the word is no longer split. You still have to check spelling
since sometimes words are supposed to be hyphenated like eight-thirty, but
for the most part it works perfectly. I only tried that on one book so it
needs more testing. Note that the ^- doesn't work, use the regular dash
instead. This is not the same as the m-dash.
