Folks we can summarize as follows:
1. students and others sometimes need page numbers and need a way of
specifying that.
2. others do not need page numbers and need a way of specifying that.
3. folks need the text and that includes chapter numbers and the titles of
such chapters. After all they are part of the text.
4. nobody needs garble at the tops of pages. Next I will assume that
nobody really wants title of book at the top of pages.
5. These goals can be achieved at the local (submitter/validator) or
official (bookshare automated tool) level. There must be some reason the
powers that be like the official automated tool. Perhaps some compromise
could be worked out to get a final result we all like. By "all" I mean the
volunteers both on this list and not on it, the general readership and
official bookshare folks who may be forced to abide by rules of which we
here have no knowledge. (If this is tru however and they share the rules
with us we may be more useful here.)
I have a couple of ongoing concerns here. I want to know how well
localized tools such as those in the latest version of k1000 really
work. I do know that version 9 has a stripper which takes out page
headings all right but removes the numbers along with them even if
requested to act with prudence. Has this improved?
