I looked this up on www.books.google.com and it showed up exactly as Carrie
guessed. The word should be "elan".

Hi Marty,
Amazon won't let me see inside the book, so I can't tell for sure, but my
guess would be "elan". Probably there's an accent mark on the 'e' which is
what confused the OCR software.
As I said, this is just a guess!

Generally a 1 is either a l or a i, and a 6 can be a G, or a b, or a c, or
something.  Beyond that I can't figure out that scanno, maybe  If I was
betting I would say it was "calm" but it doesn't quite fit, sigh.
