Hi, Lissi. There's only a concern if you validate a text file. Yes, you are
using Word, but Word handles RTF files just fine, so if you start out with an
RTF file, you don't have to worry about anything. It's when you start out with
a text file that you have to immediately convert to RTF before doing any work
on the file if you're going to work in Word and want to preserve page breaks,
provided the file has them to begin with. Take care.

I read your explanation below with interest and don't understand part of it.
I validate books in RTF files using jaws. But, I think the adjustments I make
use Microsoft word. I'm not sure how I can be using Microsoft word and RTF at
the same time. Is that what you think I'm doing? Are the changes I make
preserved because I've made them to an RTF file?
I hope my question makes sense. It's not urgent that you explain this. If I
can understand what I'm doing better, that's great. If not, and my validations
are approved, I'll be guessing I should continue working as I have been.

TXT files can contain page breaks. However the difficulty with this
format is that many popular editors do not handle page breaks in TXT files.
Notepad for example and Microsoft Word for another. These editors simply won't
include them. TXT files created by Kurzweil though, do retain proper page
breaks.
A TXT file with page breaks can be opened in Word and then immediately
saved in RTF, and the page breaks will remain. The BookShare system will accept
a txt validation back in RTF.

I noticed that there are a few .txt files on the Step One page. Also, a
submitter who I am in communication with says he has some volumes in text
format in a series which is incomplete on Bookshare. But if I am not mistaken,
.txt files have no page breaks in them. I am unclear as to what I should tell
this person, or what I should do if I should want to validate any .txt files in
general. My own inclination is to just validate them, because - as I believe
the Bookshare site says - if you can read it, then someone else can read it.
But I also believe that there is now some kind of policy that books without
page breaks should be rejected, instituted last year some time. Not everyone
is aware of this, however, or is choosing to abide by it if they are aware of
it, as the first book I submitted in January was just one long file without any
page breaks - I had been removing them from books I had scanned for my own
interest - and it was added to the collection quickly. I had just scanned the
book and finished reading it literally the day I joined Bookshare, and wasn't
aware that page breaks were a requirement. I have kept them in all my
subsequent submissions and validations, though. Anyhow, I don't want to
discourage this person from sending up these books, and I myself would like to
see them added to the collection, and I am pretty sure their text quality would
be good as I know this person does pretty good scans, but on the other hand, I
want to make sure everything is cool with the rules and such.
