Even though it might not do any good, I would contact Bookshare directly if I were you. Since they know who the validator was, they would be in a position to write a polite note pointing out the discourtesy. I had a similar experience and I did contact Bookshare but at that time they were not willing to go further with it. I think if enough of us have similar experiences, however, they would face up to the responsibility, at least I hope so. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lisa Belville" <lisab12@xxxxxxxxxxx>

Hi, Tracy.

I think that's very reasonable. Several months on step 1 is very different than say a few hours, which is about how long the 2 books were on step 1, probably less than that as they expired sometime yesterday afternoon.

Like I said before, the person doing it is probably not on either of the Bookshare lists. I don't think anyone here would purposely do this because we all respect the mission of Bookshare and are aware of the hard work necessary to scan and validate books so they reflect positively on Bookshare.

Take care,

Lisa

Hi Lisa.
Sorry to hear of your woes. I've had that happen too, and it's very
annoying. Or I've validated one copy very carefully, and someone else has
validated a duplicate copy very casually, and put it up before my copy.
But anyway.

I do look at the history, and give the "time expired" people a fair
chance, though usually not more than a week.
But I do sometimes take a "hold for" if it's been sitting on Step1 for a
while. I've seen some of those guys sit around for ages, and I start to
wonder if perhaps the "hold for" person hasn't got tied up in something
else, like, say, school, family, etc., and isn't getting back any time
soon.
So, while I do try to respect the "hold for", I'm not going to respect it
forever. Sorry if that bugs people.
Tracy

Good Friday all.

I hate to start off the day on a negative note, but I just discovered that two books which I had committed to validating have been validated and are
awaiting administrator approval.

The frustrating thing is that I only missed renewing them by a few hours.
That's right... They expired yesterday and someone has already snapped
them
up and validated them.. It's not like they languished on step 1 for
months.

The books were
The Taken by Sarah Pinborough
Borderlands Thomas F. Monteleone.

Both books were clearly designated with "Hold for Lisa Belville" in their
title.

I'd like to point out that downloading a book that has the "Hold For"
designation in the title is a tad dishonest, not to mention being in very poor taste. Many of us are trying to earn credits toward our membership,
so
while it may seem tempting to download a book with the "Hold For"
Designation, it's not exactly fair to those of us who are counting on
earning those credits.

If I am looking for something to download from step 1, I always look at
the
validation history. If the book was returned because the edit time
expired,
and the expiration date has occurred within the past week or two, I will
look for something else to download. This gives the original person the
chance to renew the book and earn their credit. This is just common
courtesy, in my opinion.

I'm probably preaching to the choir as most of us who care enough to be on
these lists most likely wouldn't do this type of thing, but I feel like
something needs to be said since it's not the first time this has happened
to myself and others.

Sorry for the snarkiness, I've been up all night validating and I was
counting on uploading these books.
