TolenoTwinCities.com, Minnesota USA Sunday, February 18, 2007 Book Review: "BlindSight: Come and See" by Jane L. Toleno By MARY ANN GROSSMANN (Extract) "BlindSight: Come and See" by Jane L. Toleno (Singing River Publications, $17.95): When I finished reading this memoir about living with blindness, I thought Jane Toleno is a remarkable woman. But, based on her feisty attitude, she probably wouldn't want to be described that way. "I do not want to be described as differently abled, handi-capable, a survivor or the like. Blind will do," she writes. "BlindSight" is Toleno's first-person account of how she perceives the world as a legally blind person. She and her twin sister were premature, and the pure oxygen pumped into their tents damaged their eyes. Jane laterhad an eye trauma that limited her sight even more. She is married, the mother of two children, and lives in Minnesota, although the book doesn't say where. In "BlindSight," Toleno weaves accounts of her personal life into explanations of how she perceives light and dark and the seasons, using both narrative and poetry. She admits to being sometimes irked by the boorish behavior of some people, especially those who don't understand how to behave around her guide dog. That's why this book is so important, especially for young readers.Besides, Toleno is a lovely poet. Here are the first lines of her poem "MyPhysical World": "In my physical world, there is no sky;/But there is air and there is earth./There are perceived, yet no visible stars;/But there is sun andthere are clouds./Summer sun packs heat./And even I squint up at her glare." "BlindSight" is published by a small press based in Ely. It should be picked up by a major publisher, because more readers need to meet Jane Toleno. http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/entertainment/16705570.htm -- BlindNews mailing list To contact a list moderator about a problem or to make a request, send a message to BlindNews-Owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx The BlindNews list is archived at: http://GeoffAndWen.com/blind/ To address a message to all members of the list, send mail to: BlindNews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Access your subscription info at: http://blindprogramming.com/mailman/listinfo/blindnews_blindprogramming.com To unsubscribe via e-mail: send a message toBlindNews-Request@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in eitherthe subject or body of the messageTo unsubscribe from this list send a blank Email to bksvol-discuss-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxxput the word 'unsubscribe' by itself in the subject line.
