Hi Gerald, Fortunately, I didn't have to release it. Tom showed me a way to correct the problem. You're right about the included images, and how they couldn't be included in an RTF, though. I wasn't thinking clearly this morning. _____ From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Gerald Hovas Sent: Wednesday, September 20, 2006 9:51 AM To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Validating RTF: Included Images Lora, While RTF files can contain images, it sounds like you are thinking of the scanned image for each page, and they wouldn't be included in an RTF document. I suspect that the software that the submitter used to clean up the book got carried away with adding the tags for specifying formatting and included the same tags over and over again instead of recognizing that the formatting has already been specified for a given passage and not bother adding the tags a second time. I've seen Word have this problem and cause the file to grow considerably when converting a DOC file to RTF. When I had my trial version of K-1000, I found that saving these files in K-1000 then again in Word clears out all of that redundant formatting, so if you don't have K-1000, then I'd suggest letting someone else validate the book since the Bookshare system will probably have problems uploading this book after validation. This appears to be why some books won't upload at that point in the process. I suspect that it has to do with the tools not being able to handle all the redundant formatting and crashing rather than choking on the size of the book. This is a 435 page book. When it saves to .txt, it's only 626K. The only reason I can think of for the discrepancy is that the RTF file includes all of the scanned images. How would I verify this? Is there any way to save the file to remove these pictures, without losing the page breaks? I usually validate in Word, and the file size seems to be bogging down the spell checker, and JAWS' ability to read in general. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Lora
