With regard to superscripting the footnotes, do it this way:
Park on the asterisk
Highlight the footnote with ctr-shft-asterisk
Then press alt-h then number 6 on the top typing row, not the numpad.
The asterisk is now superscripted.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Uncertain about Footnotes
Hello, Booksharians:
I am proofing a book where the footnote indicator is a * .
I know that I should superscript the indicator. Is there a hotkey for doing
this in Word 2019?
The footnotes are at the end of the page. I read in the Proofing manual how
to treat these notes, but I am uncertain whether I am treating them
correctly.
Below is a sample of what I am doing.
I am placing one * on the line before my example to keep it separated from
the text of this email.
Please advise whether I am correct.
Thank you.
