Hi, Max. I'm glad you're on this list and are asking good questions. (smile) Bookshare volunteers usually either scan a book or validate it. It's done this way so that 2 different people work on a book, making it more likely that one of them will spot an error if one is present. After the person who scans a book, referred to as the submitter, uploads it to the system another person, (the validater), will take over. The validater makes sure the book has the correct title, author, copyright info and often does things like a spell check and reads through the book to make sure it's complete. My description sounds more complicated than the process actually because you validate a book by reading it much as you would read a book anyway. The only difference is that you keep an eye out for mistakes and fix them when you can. Both submitters and validaters get lots of support from this list, and there is even a website with tips and tricks for volunteers. You can check it out at http://www.jbrownell.com and look for the links there about Bookshare. I hope this post helps you get started. Again, it's great to have you aboard.
