Cindy, I don't know if this will work, but I think it might. If there is something simple you can fix on a particular book, but you have 5 books checked out, release one, and have Carrie put a hold on it for you. This way, no one should take it, but you could still do the quick fix on the other book. I know Carrie's great about taking holds off or extending the due date on books, if you aren't going to be around when it is time to renew, so I'm sure she'd do this for you as well. I agree about having more than 5 books in your pile, but can see how it could be abused by some as well.

What I'd really like is for the number of books we can have in our proofreading pile to be enlarged. Then I could take a book that needs something simple to fix, like The Man Who Made husbands jealous (except in this case my libraries don't have the book). As things are now I'd have to release a book, which I've done before--and hope no one else takes it (I do have one long one that I'm pretty sure no one wil take)--and I know I'm taking a long time to proof, but that's because of the nature of the books. smile CindyWish List (i.e., books wanted added to the collection) and books-being-scanned list available at sites below Wish List: https://wiki.benetech.org/display/BSO/Bookshare+Wish+List Books Being Scanned List: https://wiki.benetech.org/display/BSO/Books+Being+Scanned+List --- On Thu, 2/18/10, gwen tweedy <gstweedy@xxxxxxx> wrote:From: gwen tweedy <gstweedy@xxxxxxx> Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: The Book on the Checkout List the Longest To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Thursday, February 18, 2010, 4:40 AM I have tended to grab from the first pages as well, but I have looked at some of the other pages. I was afraid if they were still there after a long time, that they might be something I couldn't handle not knowing a lot yet. I had 3 books I had to release one had to many pages, I got the extra pages out OK because it was a repeat of the same book, but when I went to put it back up it still said the original number of pages, so I knew there was some kind of trouble that I could not fix.The other two had something about page breaks not being right, and I knew I'd screw those up, so had to letthem go. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Melissa Smith" <mdsmith25@xxxxxxxx> To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thursday, February 18, 2010 6:25 AM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: The Book on the Checkout List the LongestI also released this book for that reason. I'mthinking that, when we release a book for a similar reason to this, perhaps we could send a note to the list, and bring it to the attention of someone who might be able to fix it.This discussion of how long books stay on the checkoutlist got me to thinking. I notice that many books are taken from the first page or 2 of results, and not the last pages. I wonder if more of the older books would be taken, if the sort order was reversed so that the older books appeared first. I know I've been guilty of taking the first book that looks interesting, instead of going through the whole list.Melissa Roger Loran Bailey wrote:I just decided to see which book has been on thecheckout list the longest and it turns out that it is one that has been downloaded by a number of people including me. It is "The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous." It has been there for about two years now and it is actually ready for the collection except for one problem. There are several pages near the beginning of the book that contain a list of characters and a description of each. The problem is that the names do not match up with the descriptions. I remember that I released it because I could not tell which name belonged with which description and I could not quite tell where one description ended and another one began. It is likely that that is why others have released it too. I suspect that a sighted proofreader might be able to tell how to match them up or, if not, the problem pages might just need a rescanning. I thought I would just bring this to your attention so that maybe someone can take a look at it and perhaps get it moving on its long overdue way._ _ _ "I believe in recognizing every human being as ahuman being, neither white, black, brown nor red.
