I don't know if this matters, but if you are using JAWS, pressing insert+4
on the number row brings up a list of symbols which you can copy to your
clipboard that includes both the single and double dagger. Why not use
that, if that is the symbol that you want? Unless, of course, you are using
a different screen reader that does not offer this option, or do actually
mind if you stump bookshare's braille translator? Just a thought.

I have given up on finding a standard code for the dagger (and thanks for
reminding me of that name), I just put in two asterisks or more if the
author insists on using symbols instead of numbers for footnote labels).
