Oh, well, that would be easier. The footnote number is just an arabic number
which follows the period at the end of the sentence without any space between.
For example: argument.1

  Hi Lori.
What format are the footnote numbers in now? If we knew that we might be able
to help you do the change in one fell swoop.

Putting the numbers into superscript, though quite acceptable to the writers
of style manuals, would confuse most speech programs, and perhaps Braille
translators too. It would be better to put them in parentheses or brackets.

  Hope this helps.

    Hi, Everyone,

I am proofing a book which has an enormous number of footnotes. I have
several questions.

Am I correct that I should be making these numbers superscript?
If so, is there an easier way to do this than to select each number go into
format, font and check superscript?

Is there a way to make all the footnote numbers superscript at one time?

Thanks for all help on this.
