Hi Jim,

All scans now have to be submitted as rtf files. smile. So all you'll have to do is save your Word 2003 files as rtf files when you are ready to submit.

There are quite a few suggestions on to make a truly excellent scan now documented in the volunteer manual.

The volunteer manual has gone through a major update since last year. It now includes detailed volunteer-written tips for producing high quality scans.

You need to be logged in to bookshare to see the manual.

Here's the link to the page with scanning tips in the manual:

https://wiki.benetech.org/display/BSO/3.+Scanning+a+Book#3.ScanningaBook-ScanningTips

Here's the link directly to a section Mayrie wrote that includes all the steps she does before submitting a scan for proofreading using Kurzweil:

https://wiki.benetech.org/display/BSO/3.+Scanning+a+Book#3.ScanningaBook-TipsforScanningwithKurzweil1000

Here's the link to a section Donna Smith wrote on tips for scanning with Fine Reader

https://wiki.benetech.org/display/BSO/3.+Scanning+a+Book#3.ScanningaBook-TipsforScanningwithFineReader

And here's the link to a section that contains tips for proofreading using Word (which are similar to those for checking a scan with Kurzweil and Openbook) that are also helpful for someone who checks their scanned book with Word before submitting it):

https://wiki.benetech.org/display/BSO/4.+Proofreading+a+Book#4.ProofreadingaBook-ProofreadingwithMicrosoftWord

I believe the process for actually submitting a book may have changed since last year, too, so you'll want to read the section on that:

https://wiki.benetech.org/display/BSO/3.+Scanning+a+Book#3.ScanningaBook-SubmittingYourScan

And of course, use this list for questions as they come up. smile.

Welcome back, too! I proofread some of your scans in the past and they were always excellent. smile.

I am beginning to scan some books again. Just wondered what differences in procedures there may be since a year ago. I save my books and submit them in MS Word 2003 format. Is that still acceptable?
I also do the following:
Make sure the copyright page is there.
Delete the book headers from the pages.
Make sure all pages are numbered.
Include blank pages with their numbers.
Any other advice is appreciated.
