Sue,

Being paternally related to precipitation with the last name of "Rains" <grin>
I do not think it is at all out of place to alert Alisa to the uniqueness of
this community. After all, we're both from Seattle. We know all 14 Aleut words
for rain! Alisa will be your primary channel to Benetech senior staff and
engineering. With your guidance she can implement the system improvements and
policy advancements that we have all so urgently hoped for.

What I ask is that each of you continue to show the respect, restraint, and
depth of commitment that you have honored me with.

Give Alisa some time to catch her breath. Take the next couple weeks to toss
around ideas here but, speaking from the position of having been your
representative inside Benetech, you can best serve her by first crystalizing
your messages offline in volunteers' chats, book discussion groups, and
proofing partnerships. Then send her something akin to a "persuasive essay" or
a business proposal that helps her argue the case for prioritizing how she will
spend Benetech resources. Maybe with a few people teaming up to polish and
package your ideas? That will minimize the learning burden on her!

There a great things in store for Bookshare. I am proud to have been able to
help you all succeed as Bookshare volunteers. Keep it and help Alisa succeed!

Dr. Scott Rains
Benetech Fellow

I do not want to rain on the new staff member’s parade, but she will find that
the Bookshare vollunteer program is quite different from what she has organized
in the past.
