Hi Reggie,

It's not likely that fart should have been part in the publisher's printed
copy. That is the kind of error that is more likely to be a scanning error.
The kind of errors that I see most often made by the publishers are missing
or added words. Sometimes the wrong word, but more like him where it should
be her, not things which could result from meshing or separating of print
letters which are the more likely behaviour of inaccurate OCR. A
familiarity with print letters helps with determining what kind of error
you're dealing with if you can't access the print book to rescan the page,
or look at it.

I'm sorry this isn't completely clear. If you have questions, please feel
free to ask here. In time, you'll get a good idea of what are publisher
errors and what kinds of errors inaccurate OCR results in.

Happy proofreading. I really wish I could give you more definite rules.
There just aren't any where defining what kind of errors things are is
concerned.

Mayrie

Now what if I knew what it was supposed to be but didn't know it was an
actual word in the book? I think this has happened to me, although of course
I am not certain since I can't read the printed book, and I fixed it not
realizing. Understood scanos can be very obvious, but what if it is not?
Should I just leave it?
still incredulous, Fart for part and leave it fart because it is in the
book? Hmmmm! Okey-dokey! Fart it is! (smiles)
