Sorry to muddy the waters. I didn't notice Deborah's response before sending
mine. Perhaps she understood your question better than I understood it.
In England, apostrophes are used for our quotation marks and quotes are used
for our inner quotes.
If you're doing a book published in England you have to leave their system
as is.
It's great to know that smart quotes are handled by the conversion software.
That saves you the trouble of the conversion I proposed.
I do use my conversion technique when I reproduce materials using Duxbury
such as CD booklets and notes from our symphony orchestra because my
settings of Duxbury make a mess of these smart quotes.

Are you hearing "open single quote" or "closed single quote"?
If so, these are smart quotes and the Bookshare software handles them just
fine. You don't need to do anything to them.
You can replace them with apostrophes if you want but you don't have to.
If they bother you, try copying one of them and pasting it into the find box
and replace it with the apostrophe.
You may also hear "open quote" and "closed quote"--these would be the smart
quote version of a regular quotation mark.

Hi fellow volunteers,
I am about halfway through scanning one of the books that Lissi was kind
enough to send to me for scanning.
I'm trying to do as much cleanup as possible -- or at least as much as I
understand how to do -- before submitting to Bookshare.
I'm running into a weird problem though: and I haven't figured out how to
solve it.
I'm using the new K1000 both to scan and to clean up the book. The problem
that I can't seem to solve has to be with quotation marks appearing where
the apostrophe should appear.
I can search for ordinary quotation marks in K1000, but these are other
kinds quite quotation marks either Smart or closed or something. When I
search in K1000, I only can search for the ordinary quotation marks.
I can't find a way to type in these special characters in K1000 so that I
can find each one and replace it with an apostrophe.
Sorry for the rather long message. I know I can read line by line, and I am
checking each page as I go, but there are so many, I'm afraid I might not
find them all.
