Many libraries put a strip of what looks like packing tape on the bindings
of paperback books because they know they will be getting some abuse. I
don't scan really fat unflexable paperbacks, but some work just fine. You
just have to test them to see if you get a good scan with the amount of
pressure that the book seems to withstand. If you get assistence in finding
the books you want to scan at the library you can ask the person helping to
tell you how close the text is to the binding. If they say it is very close
to the binding don't bother trying to scan it, because you'll just be
frustrated.
Hard covers rarely cause any problems, or concerns about abuse, but those
old leather covered books aren't such a good idea.
