I'm actually more annoyed by the number of email messages your question will generate on this list which has a tendancy to use any excuse to go off topic and beat a discussion into the ground. So let me say before people jump on me for saying that, I'm not annoyed with you personally, it the fact that we'll spend 50 messages or so discussing it to death. And I'm annoyed with myself for responding which will contribute to the discussion so I won't respond further. Thanks.

The 4600 has a more heavy duty motor with a longer mean time before failure rating. The 4600 will scan a page in 3 or 3.5 seconds and the 3600 is slower. Larry gave a good discription of the stand. It can be hgotten with a heavy metal stand which slants the scanner so that a large book will slide towardthe edge of the glas keeping it on the scanner. We didn't have the money to go for it but I would guess it is a much more durable scanner. The 3600 canbe had for $199 from amazon as of the first of December and that's what we did. -----Original Message----- From: k1000-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:k1000-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Jim Ruby Sent: Thursday, January 07, 2010 5:38 PM To: k1000@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: Scanner Model Suggestion for New Bookshare Volunteer What is the difference between the 3600 and the 4600, is it worth going for the 4600? -----Original Message----- From: k1000-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:k1000-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Christian Shinaberger Sent: Tuesday, January 05, 2010 12:11 PM To: k1000@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: Scanner Model Suggestion for New Bookshare Volunteer Hi Kane, I think I got mine from Amazon for $150, but I don't really recall the price. It varies depending on where you find it. There is also the 4600. they are book edge scanners so you do all scanning in single page mode. If you can fit a book on the bed you can use two page mode. I find it is quite fast and accurate and you do less damage to the books. I often scan books while listening to the radio. If you decide to get one pay attention to the install instructions. This usb scanner is unusual in that you should have it plugged in and turnedon before beginning the install. I don't know the scanning speed, but I often finish 300 plus page books in about two hours. If you're not already using it. I wasn't familiar with these lists prior to getting a scanner, so I basically talked to some people and read a ton of reviews in"Consumer Reports." I was mainly looking for a flatbed scanner that delivered stellar OCR performance, and I settled on the Epson Perfection 4490. I just began scanning my first Bookshare novel yesterday--(it's hardback and rather long, more than 400 pages). So far, I really like the performance of this scanner and the integrity of the text it delivers. I am told it creates nice images, too, for conventional scanning purposes (without Kurzweil), which I use for work at times. And in terms of this hardback book, I am getting a complete rendering of both pages--no text lost in the binding. But I would like to hear more about the Optibook, since I never knew about it before this message. About how much does this cost? -Kane ******************************************************* To find out how to unsubscribe, please visit: http://www.kurzweiledu.com/support_listserv_signup.asp******************************************************* To find out how to unsubscribe, please visit: http://www.kurzweiledu.com/support_listserv_signup.asp ******************************************************* To find out how to unsubscribe, please visit: http://www.kurzweiledu.com/support_listserv_signup.asp ******************************************************* To find out how to unsubscribe, please visit: http://www.kurzweiledu.com/support_listserv_signup.asp ******************************************************* To find out how to unsubscribe, please visit: http://www.kurzweiledu.com/support_listserv_signup.asp ******************************************************* To find out how to unsubscribe, please visit: http://www.kurzweiledu.com/support_listserv_signup.asp******************************************************* To find out how to unsubscribe, please visit: http://www.kurzweiledu.com/support_listserv_signup.asp******************************************************* To find out how to unsubscribe, please visit: http://www.kurzweiledu.com/support_listserv_signup.aspTo unsubscribe from this list send a blank Email to bksvol-discuss-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxxput the word 'unsubscribe' by itself in the subject line.
