Hi Cindy,
I'm someone who has perfect pitch, so I'd rather listen and learn than read,
but since I play piano, I want the stuff in this book, because it tells you
exactly where to place your fingers in some cases. Fingering is something that
I have difficulty with, especially when it comes to jazz improvisation, because
you do that on the fly. Classical training is great for technique, but the part
I'm missing is how to do the knowledge transfer. "The Jazz Piano Book" is very
highly acclaimed, and I can tell just from the text I've read that I will be
able to pick this up, because it is written in such a way that you follow it
step by step, and it gives very clear explanations about what to do and why.
Also in the book, for each technique, they give a listing of a recording to
find where you can hear a real artist play the concept in a real jazz setting,
so you can imitate how it sounds once you get the technique down. It was
Bookshare that introduced me to the book, even though it's not quite perfect,
and I'm very grateful for that. I've been wondering for lots of years how to
approach getting back my technique and going beyond where I was to do what I
want to do. I was dreading having to do it the classical way, because that's
not what I want to spend the time doing. Music isn't my full time job anymore,
and I want to have fun with it, not that I didn't before, but you get the idea.
In other words, I'm really jazzed about the chance to give this a try, and
happy that Bookshare is having a hand in it.

Jim

Part of the problem with Braille music is that lots of people aren't using it.
They think it is too hard. Many who are taking lessons and the like get people
to record their parts for them; there may be a netter way now. I love Braille
music myself, and any easy way to get it would be nice. I can't afford to buy
music software or I would do it in a New York Minute.
