Yeah, that's the way NLS does it. They put a colon after the book title and no parentheses around the series title, so you can distinguish between the two that way.

Parentheses are punctuation. I don't see why additional punctuation
would be necessary either if the parentheses are used, but if the
parentheses are not used then at least some kind of other punctuation
would be called for.

I vote for option B. I prefer the series title in parentheses, but
whether parentheses are used or not some kind of punctuation really
has to be there so we can tell when the title ends and the series
title begins. Whether the number sign is there or not does not matter
to me.

I imagine that I'll likely get a lot of differing opinions, but I'll try

go with what's most popular. Remember, this is just for the books whose 
titles I happen to edit, not something that will apply to all titles.
