Sometimes one of these non-parentheses characters will show up as part of a pair where the other part of the whole is the regular parentheses. I have observed this in non-math books. If not corrected the non-parentheses character will indeed read literally as "left brace". I therefore agree changing them to regular parentheses works unless you specifically know they are in there as math symbols.
