Hi, Charlie! You know, for some reason, I was thinking about this type of situation earlier this week. We've been talking about page numbers in the not-too-distant past, and I wonder if it might be helpful for Braille readers to have the textbook format, which retains both print and Braille numbers. Personally, I use Bookshare mainly for pleasure reading... or maybe to read a book about a particular subject that I need for personal study. In that case, page numbers aren't that important, since I probably won't have reading assignments any time soon. <Smile> However, since we have quite a few teachers and students on the list, I would think the textbook format would be extremely helpful. I have a friend who is a teacher and a member of Bookshare. A few days ago, she told me that she sometimes has to have her assistant to tell her where the page breaks will be, so that she can either read books along with her class or assign certain pages for them to read. While some of us may find the textbook format to be more tedious, I wonder if it might be the better choice. So there ya go, a penny for my thoughts! <Smile> Jana ----- Original Message ----- From: Charles Wadman To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, February 25, 2005 9:04 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Question to all Bookshare braille readers I'm about to validate a non-fiction book that's in .brf format. It appears to be a faithful rendering of the original text in that it has page numbers at the bottom of the pages and book-title and section headers at the top of each page. I realize that Bookshare braille readers are probably using refreshable mechanical braille displays rather than the traditional embossed paper. And I'm wondering how this might affect the preferred formatting of braille books. Should I reformat this into a standard "textbook" format, Literary format, or something else? Textbook format retains print page numbers (at the top right of each braille page and by a page change indicator elsewhere on the page) and braille page numbers (at the bottom right). Literary just has braille page numbers (on the top right of each page) and no print page numbers. Which format would be more useful to you? Or is there another format that you would rather see? How about running heads? Are these useful to you? Thanks for whatever advice you may have to offer. Charlie
