It may also be traditon, after all, elumination, as the Monks did it, was
where the fancy letters came from I believe.

types of disabled bookshare readers

Lori,

There is no advantage whatsoever, as far as I'm
concerned. In fact, sometimes the letters are so fancy
it's hard to tell what they are--and they cannot be
duplicated on the keyboard. (I tried once using a font
that came close to looking like real cursive writing
for letters in a book and people told me it didn't
work, it was impossible for them to read).

I do, now, however, change or retain those first
letters or words as they are because Pratik or Guido
or someone--maybe even the late Gustavo--said to keep
them. Before that I wasn't.

It seems to be that some of that sort of thing is the
publisher's desire to make the book pretty, and not
the writer's wish--and it's generally the writer who
holds the copyright. I really don't think the
appearance of the book is copyrighted, since it
changes depending upon whether the book is LP or
paperback or hardbound and in those editions it's
still the writer who has the copyright. It's the
content, it seems to me--the writer's original work.

But what do I know....grin
