I think it is to make it more visually pleasing, as well as to call attention to a new beginning/setting/viewpoint.

Hi, Evan,Yes; as far as I am concerned, I am delighted to use one font in life--in braille and in speech! But it is interesting to see different fonts with the optacon. And that raises a question for others on the list who do read print. What is the advantage of having the first letter of a chapter be in extremely large font, and what is the advantage of having the first several words of a chapter in all capts? I have seen both in books which I have recently scanned. And, yes, your message below Carrie's does read one word on a line. Can't imagine what would cause that.Cat Lover Lori----- Original Message ----- From: "EVAN REESE" <mentat3@xxxxxxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, February 04, 2008 3:52 PMSubject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Question on Scan quality for blind vs other types of disabled bookshare readersI am aware of that option, and I think I actually did make a book all one font and size, except for Chapter headings - which I manually changed to something larger - but I can't remember for sure, or why I did it. I could do that as standard practice, which would resolve the issue Carrie had with doing it. I could select the whole book and make it all one font and size, then enlarge the chapter or section headings. I think this could be done without jeopardizing bold or italics. But there may be other reasons for not doing this that I am not aware of, not being a sighted reader and all. Life is so much simpler for braille readers, having only one font. <smile>By the way, does anyone else see my message below Carrie's as having one word on each line? That's the way it looks to me, but I can't imagine why. It didn't appear that way originally.Evan----- Original Message ----- From: "Shelley L. I don't particularly like this option because it's harder for sighted people to see chapter and section titles when they are the samesize as the regular text, but it is an option. Just an FYI, Carrie ----- Original Message ---- From: EVAN REESE <mentat3@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Monday, February 4, 2008 1:47:46 PMSubject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Question on Scan quality for blind vs othertypes of disabled bookshare readers I think you're right on this. Being unable to see the screen, I have no idea how I can be aware of - let alone correct - font problems without checking the font of every word in the book manually. I have checked the fonts of headings when scanning or validating books, but for the rest, I just have to assume the fonts are okay. A person with enough vision to see the screen can look at a whole page and see that something is out of whack. I don't see how somewhat with insufficient vision could do anything similar. If I am mistaken, please let me know. I could, of course, check each page in Word or K1000 and see what kinds of fonts are on it, and what the sizes are. But as far as I know, those programs don't tell you which font is where on the page. So someone who cannot see the screen would need some way of hearing - on the fly - when the font changes and the new characteristics. Is that possible? Unless that can be done, or there is another way for someone with little or no vision to be aware of font problems without a great deal of time consuming manual checking, it seems unrealistic to expect that books on Bookshare will have no font problems, as long as people with little or no vision are submitting or validating them. So I can seethe print but it is straining so I prefer to listen. Here are my thoughts: I scan in one file type that keeps the format, kes,and submit it in one that deletes the format. This type, rtf is moreuniversal. RTF automatically deletes the formats. It is more fluidlistening to it without the format. However, I can understand as someonewho reads print why keeping the format in tact for the recent memberswould be beneficial, the only format that keeps the print in tact is KESand that is not a universal file. I hope I have answered your question Ifyou have further questions or would like to further discuss this topicplease email me off list.AnastasiaLooking for last minute shopping deals?
