Hi Lynn!

A while back, my husband was suggesting that I upgrade OB, but I kept putting it off, and now, reading about these lockup problems with it, I am glad I'm sticking with version 7. I have not lost a book with 7. It's good you have Word protecting your scan so you can proof it and not lose it.

Hi Debby!

I've found that OB8 often will lock up and I lose the text I have scanned. To prevent this, I copy each scanned page to the clipboard, as I scan it, then paste it into an rtf file. I proof my scans as I go.

Just another way of doing things, although it's not very efficient, I feel it's beneficial to me in the long run because I do not have to rescan a book because of a problem with OpenBook. *smile*

Blessings.

Debby

I use OB 8 for scanninbg. However I open Word inside OB and scan directly into word. That way I can proof as I go. I have tried everything under the sun, but you can't set OB up in any way to proof at the level needed for scanning books. There is no way in OB itself to show the mark up like paragraphs, lines, etc. So I do as I said above. It works very well for me. I have set up a specific proof reading speec theme that I switch to in word when I'm scanning and proofing. I use Jaws and do this through the congiguration manager. Happy scanning.

Dear Debby,

First of all, welcome to the list.

Secondly, I am an openbook user and am using 7.01. My husband, Mike, and I purchased 8.0, but I had several crashes with that version, losing complete books I had scanned and saved, so I do not trust that version. Several on list do use 8.0 with success.

However, when we joined the list, Mike and I proofed books with openbook; at that time .ark files were accepted by bookshare.

Unfortunately, I was never successful at editing the .rtf files with openbook; I'm not sure why.

So I switched to editing with ms Word 2003. I have really enjoyed editing with that program. I had to learn a lot of new commands, but I can now use Word very effectively and can use that skill for other functions outside of bookshare. I think I use Word at a high intermediate level, so like others on the list can help with specific questions.

I learned much of what I now know about editing with Word from this list but also from a book I purchased from National Braille Press "Word Wise xp/2002".

I'm not sure if I am answering your question or just reminiscing.

As there are two Lori's on this list I sign my emails Lori C. I used to be Cat Lover Lori, but Lori C. works.

Hi Bob!

Thanks for your helpful advice.

Since you are using Kurzweil 2000 and I have OpenBook 7.1, I'm wondering if most people who have this kind of scanning/OCR software prefer to proofread using MS Word or his or her access technology?

The book I am proofreading just has the title of each chapter in the table of contents. I'll keep your suggestion in mind for the more detailed tables of contents I might come across in the future.

Hi Debbie.
Determining the number of pages in a book can be tricky.

I use Kurzweil 1000 for proof reading and kurzy allows you to assign an operator defined page to the first actual page. This helps immensely if there are page numbers. You can go to the back of the book and see if the page number there matches what Kurzy thinks is the final page. If so, you're in luck. Iff not, then you find the first place where a mismatch occurs, and determine whether or not it is a missing page, two pages scanned as one, or just a missing page number.

Another way to approach it is, if there is a table of contents giving chapter headings and page numbers, you just get them to match.

These are merely suggestions to help you on your way to great proofing.

HI Debby,

This isn't the case by any means with all books, but it has been my
experience that, many times, when two pages appear to be blank at the
beginning of a book, one, in fact contains the title of the book in a funky font that OCR couldn't figure out what to do with, and the other is empty. So, when I think this might be the case, (just by gut instinct, or by asking
a sighted person with access to a hard copy of the book) I will put the
title of the book on the first of the blank pages and the statement like
this: [This page Contains No Text.] on the second blank page. And I number
with lower case Roman numerals all preliminary pages.

Just what I do. In case it comforts, or enlightens in some way.

Happy proofreading!

Mayrie

Hi Cindy!

I am blind.

No, I don't have a copy of the book and was unfamiliar with it until I
downloaded it. On the book description, it said it was Submitted By:
Sharon Hughey, so, maybe if you are on the list, Sharon, you could let me
know if there are to pages missing along in the book. I have put notes to myself where I think they are, which, of course I will remove before I check
in the book.

Debby, are you sighted or blind? Do you have the print book to work
from and perhaps a sighted friend or partner who can look at the book
and tell you about the preliminary pages and where the numbering
starts? If not, there are many of us who fortunately are sighted and if
we can get the same edition of the book that uou're proofing will be happy
to hslpe you out.
