Naw, I’m not thrilled with it either!

Thanks, Valerie. I’ll try narrowing the margins to see if that will help.

I’m not fond of Word 2010.

I have seen this happen where the setting for anything from line spacing to
space added before and/or after paragraphs can "fill" a page quicker than it
should, so one of the things I do in prepping a book is to select all text, and
since I am sighted and certain spacing makes catching broken paragraphing
easier, I set line spacing to 1.15, and add 6 pt. Before paragraphs and 0
after. I also set my margins to narrow, in addition to 22" length.

Maybe this will help or not, but it eliminates nearly all soft page breaks
except in very long multi-columned lists that were originally in tiny print.

Hi Lori,
I've had this problem a couple of times since I installed Word 2010. I
really don't know why it happens; I wish I did. I have been able to delete the
soft page breaks sometimes. On one book, I had to take two pages (one before
and one after the offending soft page breaks) out of my book file, copy them
into a new file, clean them up by deleting the offenders, and then put the two
pages back in my original book file. I figure that there must be an easier
way. Hopefully someone here knows what it is. Meantime, I wanted you to know
that you're not alone!

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Problem with soft page breaks

I am proofreading with Windows 7 and Word Office 2010 and am encountering a
problem which I have not had before.

When I get to the bottom of a page, and sometimes at the top I have needed
to add a return before the first line of text or before or after a page
number at the bottom of the page.
On many pages, when I add a return I get a soft page break. I have changed
the page length to 22 inches, all side and top and bottom margins are set at
one inch. Also, I have checked to be sure that the white space above and
below each paragraph is set at zero.
Is there any other way to remove white space?
I know that soft page breaks are not a problem for the translator, but they
are a problem for me, simply because I find them confusing.
Does anyone have any idea why this problem is occurring and even more
important has to solve it?
Thanks.

Lori C.
