Dear Regina,

Did you know that volunteers contributed over two thousand books last year. There were books added by staff, the outsourcers and the publishers, but I think two thousand plus is a proud number, not to be sneezed at! And these two thousand books were all books members particularly chose and wanted, either for themselves or for others, according to the original vision of Bookshare.

You aren't alone! Being blind, almost, and a braille reader myself, I know others who use braille in their pleasure reading or volunteering. Bookshare certainly hasn't written us off as unimportant yet. I think they realize that while our numbers may be fewer, our need is greater. The gap between print and braille for blind and deaf blind readers is wide. I believe Bookshare realizes the nobility in their commitment to bridge that gap for us. And, while in my experience, sighted people, dyslexic or not, can do most things in life far faster than blind people can, Bookshare has always valued our efforts and built its reputation on its belief that we can deliver quality work.

It could be that you're expecting too much from yourself too fast. Give yourself time to regain your energy. Don't worry about the changes. You'll soon learn that many steps in proofreading have actually become easier, and that the changes there are aren't that complicated.

I hope you'll take me up on my offlist offer.

Take care of yourself and no more despair!

Always with love,

Lissi

I am beginning to despair. I admit I am not a good proofer and try to stay
to books that I know are excellent scans. However, with the way the site
seems to work and the fact that more and more books are being placed in the
collection by other means and all that is being expected from proofers and
scanners, I just am not certain I want to continue. I love the idea of
Bookshare, or what it was people helping people, but now for me it has
gotten just way, way too techy. I don't have Open Book or Kurzweil (cannot
afford it nor will my state get it since I don't work for BKS) and I
absolutely know virtually nothing about Word as I do not use it in email or in my regular work doing transcription (have a much easier program taught to
me for that). I believe BKS has become mostly for sighted dyslexics, and
that is fine if that is what Benetech wants, but I am feeling like I have
been left behind as a volunteer. I want to volunteer and do a good job. I
am just afraid I am being asked to work in a program and do things I don't
understand. Question: With all the new things we must do (formatting and
such), how does anyone validate with a Braillenote or Packmate or has that
gone the way of the dinnasaur too?

Sorry if I sound depressed. I just went through a whole lot of illness in
the last year, and I was so, so glad to be feeling good again and looking
forward to picking this bacvk up. I just do not think I am techy enough,
and I am deeply saddened by this whole thing. I can get books to read on
Bard so I will not lack for reading, but I was really enjoying helping in my own very small way (compared to some of you) with this project. I have not
decided if I will continue to try yet, but it looks like I am lost to
Bookshare as of this moment and it brings me to tears. I do not even know
once I follow Mary's instructions on fonts how to make it change just what I
have highlighted. Off now before I do cry. I will make a decision in the
next couple of days, but right now I feel like a failure.
Reggie

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Problem submitting books

I just tried submitting a couple of books and I couldn't get to the category
screen. I was stuck both times on the screen where you put title, author,
publisher, copyright information, synopses, etc. When I try going to the
category screen, nothing happens. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong or
is it a problem with Bookshare? Help! Thanks
