Hi gang,

This situation has come up twice in the past week, so I thought I'd let
everyone know about it.

We can't put books into the collection before they are officially released and
for sale to the general public. Before most books are officially released,
there are copies of books sent to various people for them to review for
content, or review for a newspaper, or whatever. These books are called
"advance reading copies" or "galley proofs". Last week I found a book in the
approval queue where the copyright page said "field test copy". Amy the
librarian agreed with me, that it was a copy of the book prior to publication,
so I had to reject it, even though there was a 1982 copyright in the book.

There was another book in the approval queue where the first page listed which
person at the publishing house to send your review of the book to. It also
listed the "tentative page count". So once again, Amy said it was an advance
reading copy, which means I rejected it.

I wish I had an exhaustive list of all of the phrases that mean "this is a
pre-release of the book" but I don't. No one does. So, if anyone comes across a
phrase on the title or copyright pages that might mean that the book is an
advance reading copy, please email me or Amy the librarian (amym@xxxxxxxxxxxx)
and ask our opinion. We really want to put all books into the collection, and
we feel terrible when we have to reject the book at the last step of the
process.

Hope this helps someone sometime!

Carrie
