Hi Mickey,

I think your suggestion is a great idea! I have learned most of
what I know from other members on this list. If I hadn't been guided in the
beginning in how to do a better job, I wouldn't have known that I was not
doing the best for books that I could, nor would I have had any idea how to
create easily readable books with as few errors as possible.

This list and the wisdom of members who had already encountered the
problems that I encountered as a new volunteer have been invaluable to me.

Mayrie

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Preaching to the choir?

I've been giving this proofreading issue a lot of thought. I would think
most of the people on this list are dedicated, caring and loyal volunteers
of Bookshare. Why else would we be on the list? To learn, to make our
submissions, whether they are scanning or proofreading, the best they can
be.

My suggestion is that membership to the list be a prerequisite for
volunteering. That way, maybe the people who aren't reading would read these
messages. I understand there are no guarantees, but at least there's the
possibility.

I've learned a lot from the list, gotten some good ideas, skipped some that
didn't apply, saved many. I class the reading of this list as part of my
volunteer time. If it were made mandatory for volunteers to be on the list,
they may not read it, but would at least have the material laid out for
them.

Ideas? Comments?

Mickey
