Hi Mayrie and everyone.

I personally put all page numbers at the top of pages even if it means
moving them from the bottom to the top. It makes the DAISY books flow so
much better and is worth the effort, in my opinion.

Blessings.

Hi Denise!

You can leave the page numbers at the bottom of the pages.
Bookshare, as you know doesn't require them to be at the top. They do need
to be surrounded by blank lines still.

The issue of varying placement of page numbers in my opinion is
that they should all be in the same place. Because, most of the time, when
the placement varies, it is because the page on which the placement of the
page number moves from the top to the bottom is a page containing a chapter
heading. There absolutely must be something above the chapter heading, most
logically the page number. If no text of some sort precedes the chapter
heading on a page, the stripper will often strip the chapter heading from
the book.

I personally prefer all page numbers at the tops of pages. This is
why. For people using the xml files, especially children, if the page number
is at the bottom of the page and a child looks for that page number then
immediately starts reading, he/she will be reading the wrong text, will in
essence start on the page following the one on which he/she was asked to
begin. This is not the same issue with people using the daisy or braille
files, as their page numbering is handled differently, and the page number
will always in daisy and brf files (brf being the file extension for
braille) appear at the top of the page.

Hope that helps.

I will in a minute post again my list of what I do in preparing a
book for the bookshare collection. This does include scanning information
as well as proofreading information. I have added to it since my last
posting as my treatment of elipsis was not included before. It isn't a
check list, but could easily be made into one.

Mayrie

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Page numbers 101

I know this has been discussed ad nauseum, but I just want to make sure I
have it right:-)

I now have a couple of books to proofread that have the page numbers at the
bottom of the page.
Is it ok to leave them there, and if so, I assume they will need the blank
lines before and after?

Also, for future reference, some books will have the page numbers on the top
of the page but put the page numbers for the first page of the chapter on
the bottom of the page (i.e. varying where the page number is place
throughout the book). How should this be handled? Leave them where they
are, or make them consistent?

Thanks for the help!
Denise
