[bksvol-discuss] Re: Page breaks missing

It was called Absolution Gap by Alastair Reynolds; a Science Fiction novel. If anyone put page breaks in it, they worked awfully fast, because I submitted the book on Tuesday, January 17, and it was approved just two days later. I was, and still am, listed as a Bookshare volunteer, since I don't like broadcasting my email address everywhere. I have considered changing that, but haven't done so yet.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Page breaks missing

I'm curious, Evan. Do you remember what the book was
that you submitted that didn't have page breaks? Was
it a Western?

I've validated at least two books in that condition,
and I put the page breaks in. In one case, perhaps
both, I did check to see who submitted the book. When
I come across a book that has problems like that, if
it was submitted by someone who is on the list and who
tries and who seems nice I fix them. If a book has the
same problems and other scannos but is by a bookshare
volunteer or someone I know doesn't care, I'll reject
it.

You could BSO them if it is really nagging at you.
<grin>. You wouldn't even
have to rescan them if you still have the original
files, and the original
books if you want to make certain to avoid any
mistakes.

Unfortunately, the first book I submitted didn't
even have page breaks, let
alone page numbers. I always used to take them out
when reading through my
scans before joining Bookshare, thinking them
unnecessary in an electronic
file. This was January 2006, after the policy about
page breaks being
required was instituted; but I was unaware of it,
and whoever validated my
book either was also unaware of it, or just didn't
bother to look or didn't
care; and the staff - Gustavo at the time -
apparently didn't check either -
relying on the validator's good judgment, I guess. I
could resubmit it with
the page breaks intact - since I still have the
original book and the
original file - but I keep procrastinating. Other
than missing page breaks
and page numbers, the text quality is great, since I
read through all of it.
I would have to add nearly 600 of them, along with
the page numbers, looking
through the book and finding where each page ends. I
keep thinking that I
should redo it, but there are so many other books I
want to do; and my
standards are a lot higher now than they were then -
having developed a
serious case of Deranged Perfectionism. So I just
don't think about it too
much. <smile>. Maybe someday....

I did do a BSO of one of my own books last year
because it had hard returns
at the end of every line of print, and I was not
aware - or it wasn't up on
Jake's site at the time - of the method for
eliminating them while not
losing those at the ends of paragraphs. I have read
that tip since then, but
I still don't think I understand it.

I think many of us here have early submissions that
would be inconceivable
to put up now. I thought I was doing a great job at
the time, but my
standards have evolved over time, just as
Bookshare's standards have
improved. I don't know whether I want to go back and
redo every book from
back then, even though I know that they don't meet
my standards of today.

At the same time, I do want to encourage people to
do a better job with
their submissions than I started out doing because I
have a better sense of
all the different ways these books may be read and
therefore why it is
important to keep them as authentic to the printed
version as possible.

In other words, if you know you're doing the best
job you can now, unless
the old books are unreadable, I would concentrate on
what you're doing now
to add books to the collection.
