Does anyone know the difference between ^+ and ^- ? and, does anyone why one 
works in some circumstances and the other in other circumstances?

  Optional hyphens in word can be eliminated by replacing ^- with nothing at 
all. I hit delete in the second box and then press Alt A to replace them all.
