Hi Kim, I don’t own a 3800 yet, but it sounds not too unlike my 3600, so I think it is probably normal. Incidentally, your sound file tells me that the 3800 doesn’t scan all that much faster than the 3600. As far as alignment goes, I generally align the book to the left because I sit to the left of the scanner, and that way the book is closest to me. Whatever is most convenient for you. Took me long enough, didn't it? I've been eying them since I joined this list and received the recommendation! LOL Oh well... I'll be using it with Kurzweil 12 under Windows 7 64 bit. I have a couple quick questions, please. First of all, when scanning, it makes a rather strange sound at the end of each scan that I haven't heard with either my ancient Epson or my Cannon three-in-one. I've thrown a file in Dropbox so you can hear it. You should be able to right click this link and open this tiny MP3 file, or just press enter on it and listen: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5837974/2014_05_13_145805.mp3 Is this sound normal? Also, can someone tell me the proper alignment for a page, please? I know the lid opens front to back, and assume the spine of a book or magazine, for instance, sits on the edge, but do I align the page to the left or right of the scanning surface? I intend to read the manual, as well, FYI. Finally, for those using Kurzweil, would it benefit me to upgrade to version 13? I happily will if there are noticeable improvements in scan quality. Many thanks in advance! I look forward to becoming a much more active volunteer now, and beginning to scan for the collection. *gulp* A little nervous, I must admit. I hope everyone is well and having a happy spring! And if per chance this appeared earlier today, my apologies for the repeat; I had to re-subscribe to the list for some reason. LOL An enigma!
