Gotcha, Sandi. Think I'm good in that respect, then. *smile* Thanks much!

Hi Kim,

I have mine oriented with the lid opening from front to back also. I just told
you that to let you know what is the top of the scanner.

Thanks a million, Sandi! I really appreciate all these great tips. LOL I had
no idea I had it oriented incorrectly. LOL Woops! I have it positioned with
the lid opening from front to back, but will try turning it as you suggested
and see if it makes any kind of difference. Thanks about the 98% threshold,
too. That's a great idea, and sounds like it'll give excellent results that
way!

Yeah, I thought that sound was pretty disconcerting, too, which is why I wanted
to check to make sure my unit wasn't defective or something. Hahaha. This is
it's first day of use, though, so I'll get use to it.

I have 12.4, also, at present. After optimizing a scan today with the 3800, I
was really very please with the results.

Appreciate the offer of off-list help; may take you up on that! Very much
appreciated, indeed!

Warmest,

Kim

Hi Kim,

The sound is absolutely right-and it takes some getting used to. Partially
it's because this is a much faster scanner than the others you have had. Mine
also, every once in a while, makes a really disconcerting sound that makes me
think of a contented guide dog's little growl. All these sounds are resets of
various kinds. Sometimes the unit will make all but the last little sound of
it's usual scan, then pause and make that sound. You need to hear the last
sound before you scan another page. Otherwise the scan fails. That just means
you have to rescan the page, but it's annoying when you're moving along quickly.

I am scanning with Kurzweil 12.04, and find it gives excellent scans.
Upgrading is kind of your choice, but I think you'll be fine with Version 12.
I use FineReader, because it is most accurate, and I set it for 98.7 accuracy.
You can let a page or two go below that and probably still be getting an
excellent scan, but if you set it that high and it doesn't say the accuracy is
lower than your standard, you know it's really, really good!

I've had my 3800 since November of 2012, and it's still by far my best
technology purchase!

Oh, on the 3800, the buttons are at the top of the scanner. It's lid opens to
the left. I have found, though, that you can pretty much scan a page however
it's most comfortable and it turns out. To do a book edge scan, I place the
book so that even pages face the top of the scanner and odd pages face the back
of the scanner. As a check, since in the middle of the book it can be hard to
remember which side I was just scanning, I find a mark on the book that lets me
know which is the front and which is the back of the book, so I don't scan to
the middle and then accidentally scan back to the beginning.

This scanner takes a little getting used to-but it's well worth it.

Please feel free to e-mail me off-list with questions.

Sandi

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Opticbook 3800 Question

Hi All,

I'm the proud new owner of an Opticbook 3800. Took me long enough, didn't it?
I've been eying them since I joined this list and received the recommendation!
LOL Oh well...

I'll be using it with Kurzweil 12 under Windows 7 64 bit. I have a couple
quick questions, please. First of all, when scanning, it makes a rather
strange sound at the end of each scan that I haven't heard with either my
ancient Epson or my Cannon three-in-one. I've thrown a file in Dropbox so you
can hear it. You should be able to right click this link and open this tiny
MP3 file, or just press enter on it and listen:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5837974/2014_05_13_145805.mp3

Is this sound normal?

Also, can someone tell me the proper alignment for a page, please? I know the
lid opens front to back, and assume the spine of a book or magazine, for
instance, sits on the edge, but do I align the page to the left or right of the
scanning surface? I intend to read the manual, as well, FYI.

Finally, for those using Kurzweil, would it benefit me to upgrade to version
13? I happily will if there are noticeable improvements in scan quality.

Many thanks in advance! I look forward to becoming a much more active
volunteer now, and beginning to scan for the collection. *gulp* A little
nervous, I must admit.

I hope everyone is well and having a happy spring!

And if per chance this appeared earlier today, my apologies for the repeat; I
had to re-subscribe to the list for some reason. LOL An enigma!

Warm Wishes,

Kim
