I've used the Optacon all my adult life, and, like Lori, I would not submit scans to Bookshare without it.

Before I got my first OCR software, OsCaR, I did read some books with it, but it took a very long time. Now, I still use it to read paper mail, mostly to determine whether it is junk or not. Anything longer than a page or two is scanned now. By far, the most important use of my Optacon now is to check my scans.. On those relatively rare occasions when I proofread others scans, I always have a print copy of the book to check.

You cannot use it to look at photographs, but when I was in college,, I was able to look at graphs and line drawings. I remember looking at drawings of waves in my physics book and thinking that whoever said that a picture is worth a thousand words was making an understatement.

And even if the speed is not fast, I use the optacon whenever I scan a book for Bookshare. I would never submit a book to Bookshare if I did not have an optacon. And it was the device that changed my life; I cannot say enough good things about it.

True in most cases. I've heard of a few people who could read as fast as they could talk, but that is not the normal reading rate for most people, even those such as myself who've been using it for many years.

From your question, it sounds as though you are not familiar with the
Optacon. If that is the case, you might not want to buy it. I don't know
whether it is possible to get much use out of it without training, but I've
never heard of anyone who did.

Is that little unit all that is needed?

Just wanted to let people know there is an Optacon (not mine) on eBay, item
#120735157413. It is supposed to be in used, working condition. So, if
someone is hoping to snag one of these, it might be worth more questions to
the seller. It is guaranteed to not be DOA.
Take care!
