Hi Lori,

When you hit the odd sequence of characters and it seems like Openbook just crashed on you, it is actually IBM's ViaVoice that is doing the crashing. One thing you can do so that you don't lose any of your editing is hit a Control-S to save any changes before getting out of Openbook and restarting. When I edit I also save new changes under a different file name every time. I use the Save As choice from the file menu whenever I start a new edit session and just tack on a number to the end of the original file name. This way if I do something dumb, or the file becomes corrupted, I don't loose all my efforts. When I finally finish I upload the last copy and then delete all the earlier renditions.

Another way to get around the ViaVoice crashes is to not use it but use your screen reader software instead for speech in Openbook.

Jim and All,

Open Book has problems too. When reading a document, open book will crash if it finds an unusual string of characters, i.e., ^^^...,^. Sometimes it will crash during a lengthy find and replace, and sometimes it will crash for no reason! Also, as I have written before, it does not always work properly in two-page mode.We have a friend who works with computers, and he believes that Kurtzweil is more stable.

Even so, your problem, Jim, sounds very frustrating. Wish I had some suggestions to offer.
