[bksvol-discuss] Re: Open Book Problem was The Case of The Perjured Parrot?

Interesting, I went back and looked at my scans. Many of them do have page numbers without page breaks. Here's an interesting thing I found. I converted them to epub, using ibooks on my ipod touch, I do have chapter navigation.

Hi, Russ,
I have Open Book 9 and could not find any information about preserving page breaks either in the menus or the manual.

However, if in fact when you scan and then convert the files you have no page breaks preserved, you might call tech support at Freedom Scientific for a solution. Of you can email them.

Best of Luck.

I think if Russ can provide the books, there are several sighted volunteers
willing to divide and conquer this project. The biggest problem for us has
been procuring the correct copies of the books. If I have a book in hand, it
becomes not nearly so difficult.

Russ, which version (is it Open Book) do you have currently? There might be
some way to find where page breaks were... I know in Pages on my Mac every
page break was paragraph marker, space and two more paragraph markers. On
the other hand, I know K3000 strips page breaks and is very annoying.

Seems like technology is always a love/hate relationship…

I understand how you feel. Unfortunately, at this point in time, I don't
have the money to buy Kurzweil 1000. I thought long and hard about saying
anything about having this collection.

As a blind volunteer who had this issue early on, I'd encourage you, Russ,
to find a better way! A book that is not available for proofing by a blind
volunteer leaves out a lot of volunteers. And a bad scan (one that doesn't
include page numbers and breaks) is unfair to any volunteer that gets it,
whether blind or sighted. In my case, because I could, I switched from
OpenBook (which did this to me no matter what I did!) to Kurzweil 1000. I
have happily scanned books which others have happily proofed for nearly 2
years, which made it very worth it! If you can do it with settings, that's
even better, but to have your scans really work for Bookshare, you need to
figure out how to have pagebreaks and page numbers retained. That's a very
basic need, and it is totally possible.

I'd love to read the Perry Mason books!

Sandi

Dear Russ;

Are you saying that none of the 82 have pagination or page breaks? If so,
that really is not a good trend to set. I was under the impression that it
was just a limited number and then the scans could be adjusted to have that.
I can't speak for anyone else, but it probably took us 20+ hours to insert
pagination and page breaks manually, and that was not proofreading. It is
very time-consuming. Not to mention trying to find exact copies of your
books. If that is the case, are you going to be willing to send your books
to sighted volunteers to lessen the burden of completing the work?

You are correct. I'm the one who has been uploading them. I now have all
82 Perry Mason novels. The remainder need pagination and page breaks.

Hi, Ann!

I think the problem with all these was they needed pagination and page
breaks. We did one, inserting them manually and it was time intensive, but
scan was high quality otherwise. We were waiting to get some of ours back
that we had sent out to be scanned, but have not yet gotten them, so did not
commit to more at this time. Not sure how a blind person would insert
pagination, but they are good otherwise...

Hi all,

Cindy, I have just downloaded The Case Of The Perjured Parrot. I take it
that these are the Earl Stanley Gardner books you mentioned last night? If
you still want this one, let me know and I'll release it. I am happy to
proof it. I suspect that it's one of these books done with Open Book that
has section breaks instead of page breaks as it is listed as having fifteen
pages.

Again, if you want this here book, I'll be happy to release it back to you
as it still has your hold on it. Please advise.

Ann P.
