I only do nonfiction and textbooks. Before I started volunteering I felt
there are too many fiction books out there that I haven't read to spend the
time to scan them. My guess though is that if it isn't recognizing well it
may be due to the settings.

Hi, John!

What type of books to usually scan? As someone who scans a lot of fiction,
some cookbooks, and tons of children's books, I can tell you that the auto
recognition often misses tons of text. As a matter of fact, I will often
check the collection for books that Nichole has physical copies up before I
pass them on, and one of my biggest complaints is that they are often
missing pages of text because of irregular fonts or missing chapter titles
because of unusual presentation (like pictures around or made out of
pictures or things that can cause it to think it was a picture. A children's
book I scanned today often left off parts of words or enclosed words within
a picture instead of identifying them as text. I think that is part of our
concern. However, if you are doing textbooks or traditional nonfiction, that
is much less likely to be an issue.

I also don't proof within the program so don't know if it works or not.
These problems don't make the software unusable though.

You still haven't answered the original question: If someone that is sighted
can't access any of the basic functions without using a mouse, how can you
do it? Main points of interest are:

1. How do you spellcheck without a mouse?
2. How do you fix errors before rendering to the OCR engine?
3. How do you remove images without using a mouse?
4. How do you exclude text areas from the OCR process without a mouse?
Mainly, how you draw boxes around text blocks?

I'm sure there are more questions someone would want answers to, but this is
a good start anyways. Detailed directions on each point would be a good
idea.

I really haven't found that to be an issue. I typically scan in the program
and edit in Word. I have done a lot of college type books with graphs and
tables in them. They work well.

Too often pictures get recognized as text and it's tedious to remove stray
characters. I don't find Omnipage ignores them. They either process them as
text or a graphic and either way I have to fix it later. It's faster to fix
it first. Unless you have some hints you would like to share? I would love
to know.

Others who use Omnipage or are thinking about it may want to know too.
