Like I said, I got the suggested standard when I asked. That probably wasn't clear, though -- it was a private email, not as part of the postings here. As a long time volunteer, I've discovered that many things change and we often don't hear that through the volunteer discussion list, so I ask every now and then off-list what we're currently supposed to do. I can't find the original email back to me with the stuff on the author name that I used when I wrote that up. My laptop got 'bricked' by one of Microsoft's messed up automatic update (lots of people apparently had that happen just this last week again according to the news) so I don't have access to my email archive to see the original email I had.

If the author's name isn't supposed to be 18 point bold, then hopefully Madeleine can tell us what it is supposed to be.

Hi Valerie,

Just FYI, we were never officially told on the volunteer list of this policy change.

I stumbled upon it a few weeks ago quite accidently. I like to read the comments to the proofers on books that I see kicked back for additional proofing—just wondering what issues keep apearing over and over again. I like to know how to make my submissions better. I started seeing this instruction to make the author 18 pt and bold. Since this mark-up is used to aid in navigation I, too, am unsure why it was implemented... It seems like it only adds visually to the book. But I started then adding that to the list of things I do before I submit.

Judy;

I only skim messages these days. When did things change asking authors to be 18 pt? I thought that was reserved for sections in tomes and cookbooks etc.? I somehow missed that memo and have not ever given authors any enlarging, although I bold if done in print (common). Why is it preferred to enlarge author name and if it is, does this mean illustrators, too? Doing lots of kids books, they often have equal billing.

Thanks!

Valerie

The author's name being in 18 point and bold on the title page is something that has been added to the suggested standards in the last two or so years. A book isn't going to get kicked back for more work if the author's name isn't done that way, but it's what's preferred currently.
