-I've had several checks lost in the mail over the years. It's not good when they are inthe payment of bills, like my payment to the telephone company several years ago, and once to a credit-card company. Then, when they don't receive them, they charge late fees, although if one has an excellent payment record they'll take your word for it and reverse the fee. I had that happen with payment to a city for utillities, once, too. Stopping payment on checks is too expensive; I just write new check and wait to see if the old one turns up. If it does' I'll have a credit on my account. If it doesn't, no harm done. Theoretically, checks can't be cashed if they're over six months or so old. However, I keep the payment recorded in my checking account so I always have a little cushion. After several years, if I need the money added, I do so. The annoying check-got-lost-in-the-mail incident was a check I sent to a video rental place for a gift certificate for a Christmas present for my daughter. Apparently they never received it, because I never got the gift certificate, and the check never cleared my bank. Thinking that was a one-time thing and wouldn't happen again, I did the same thing the next year and the same thing happened. I think they just have thrown the envelopes away without even opening them. Once, though, agood thing happened. I sent a check to a person inpayment of something--Ican't remember what--and it never cleared my bank. I finally called her and asked if she'd received it. She said yes, and she deposited it in her bank--so one of the banks apparently lost the check. She got her payment and I still had my money. That was several years ago. With money being electronically transferred between banks these days, I doubt that could happen again. On the other hand, there are sometimes technological failures thatput money from one account to some else's, and that's a mess to straighten out. Fortunately, that hasn't hapened to me, but it has happened to a friend. Cindy __________________________________ Yahoo! Music Unlimited Access over 1 million songs.
