"It wouldn't help much" is true from the perspective of a sighted
person. However, any vision at all even shadows helps in travel and other
things. I have no light perception, no shadows nothing. Even light
perception would give me more to work with when traveling. So having the
operation done to give the child any vision at all is probably what they
are going for.
