I think emodicons are translated into speech via special scripts for the
particular screen reader that are written to recognize such emodicons.
These scripts are only available in certain programs that the scripts are
written for, but I have come to recognize what each one is comprised of
symbolically.
A wink, I believe, is symbolized as either ;) or ;-).
