Hi, Kestrel, welcome to the list. I think genre labels help because you
may know where books fit. That being said, what do you make of
slipstream stuff, that which makes a stew of ideas and partakes of more

A wise choice--I'm currently in the middle of such a debate on another
list 
because a number of people claim genre labels are arbitrary and useless,
and 
I keep insisting that you need a way to be able to find the books.
