I understand you aren't scanning a document. So, you are saying that the optimize scanning dialog opens when you don't have a document open? If this is the case, then I'm guessing things are not as I first supposed, that it wasn't properly installed. I haven't done a lot of recognition of pdfs, but I'm thinking that you probably can't optimize recognition until the document is fully loaded and has been recognized. Then, you can run the optimize recognition, and see what you get better results with. The only options in the optimize recognition dialog are text quality and recognition engine. Both of these can also be adjusted within the settings menu under recognition.

If you open Kurzweil without opening any documents, and you click
on the
optimize scanning option, does anything happen? If it doesn't,
I'm
thinking that there was a problem during installation and it
isn't fully
installed. If I open Kurzweil without a document open, I see the
option
to optimize scanning, but not recognition. When I select
optimize
scanning a dialogue opens.

Okay, there are two problems.

1. At the moment I am not scanning books; only image files of
PDFS.

2. There is no dialog that shows up when I click on either
optimize
option. I repeat nothing at all happens.

When you open the optimize menu, you have two choices: Scan and
Recognition.
You can only choose Recognition if you are keeping images in
your
scans.
Let's ignore that one for the moment. If you go to the
Scan portion of Optimize, you will enter a dialog box that gives
you a
number of things to check. You can check or uncheck whichever
ones you wish.
Some are checked by default, others are unchecked by default.
Once you've
tabbed through to Okay, the optimization will begin. Make sure
not to move
the book until K1000 says, "Optimization complete." Then you can
tab through
the settings and see what has changed. Tab through to Okay
again, or just
hit the Enter key if you don't want to see the settings, and
you'll be done.

I am very confused about optimization. I open a Anddf, stop
recognition
and clic on optimize ... and nothing happens.

Maybe I just need to get used to it; but K1000 really confuses
me.

Two things you can do: You can use the Optimization wizard in
the
Scan menu
and wait for K1000 to try and get the best scan it can. Or, you
can go
immediately for grayscale in the Scan portion of the Settings
menu. That
will very often give you a pretty good result. The recognition
may take
longer, substantially longer on an older system, although I
don't
think
that's much of an issue these days. But grayscale will give you
good scans
even when other settings will not.

Dear Booksharians,

I just received my copy of Kurzweil 1000 for personal use. I am
wondering
if anybody has general tips on scan/recognition settings to make
the raw
scans come out as good and clean as possible. I am a new user,
so I have
no idea what works and what doesn't. Any assistance is much
appreciated.
