Hi Valerie,

I think I write equally well in Braille and typing, though I use typing more, so to test it I might need to practice the Braille a bit. I used to write really fast on a slate, dot by dot! I'm a bit slower on the PAC Mate, because its touch is heavier than I'm used to, and I find that occasionally I press keys, thinking they've done what I wanted, and reading back, I find I've made a mess. With a good, responsive keyboard, which I had on my Braille Lite, I was able to Braille fast enough to copy a lecture word-for-word. I sometimes did that in college, just to keep myself awake!

As for the comment about Braille Touch eliminating the need for "expensive extra equipment" when using touchscreen phones, what equipment are they talking about? I'm not as fast with the touchscreen qwerty, but I can do it well enough to write an e-mail. And the nice thing about the iPhone is that I didn't have to buy anything adaptive to use it. And if you need something, you can get a screen overlay for the phone for almost nothing!

I wouldn't want to have to pick Braille or qwerty. I use and appreciate both!

Sandi

From one of my tech lists:

Iinteresting article on an app for typing in Braille:

Can Braille be faster than QWERTY? App developer thinks so

If Mario Romero has his way, we'll all be learning Braille soon.

The post-doc researcher at Georgia Institute of Technology has co-developed an app, called BrailleTouch, that could help blind people send text messages and type e-mails on touch-screen smartphones without the need for expensive,
extra equipment. ...
I'd love to hear thoughts on this...
