I've decided that this kind of tenacity as it applies to myself is
stubbornness when I'm doing something I shouldn't, and determination when
I'm doing a good thing.
Valerie, you might visit the scanning and proofreading manual. You
can find a link to it from the volunteer home page on the bookshare site.
Somewhere in the scanning and proofreading manual are Christina's
instructions for how to get the best scan using Fine Reader. Maybe she has
ironed out the bugs that you're being plagued by. Even if the version is
different, there may be tips that will help!

Yes, I definitely have to laugh at the thought of Valerie giving up. She
will literally stay up all night until she gets it right. And I don't mean
just okay, she has to get it absolutely PERFECT! Then, she will badmouth the
software company for days on end for putting out a product that works
poorly.
Has she told you lately that she HATES Word 2007? Smile Don't worry, she
will get everything scanned and proofed that she has intended to. Once
again, she may stay up all night, but she will do it. I guess you could say
there are good and bad things about being OCD. She does accomplish what she
is setting out to do, but she might kill herself doing it! Smile

Do absolutely not beat yourself up about this! If we had known what
software you were using to scan, we could have told you about the section
breaks. It's not your fault. Fine Reader is what bookshare uses in-house,
and those of us who have proofread bookshare-scanned books just know to
convert the section breaks to page breaks before beginning to proofread.
That converting is really, and truly no big deal at all. Don't give up
scanning, or even bother to stop doing what you are doing. You can convert
the section breaks to page breaks before submission, or put in the comments
section of the submission form that the proofreader needs to do it! This is
truly no big deal at all. It's so well-known, in fact, that we've included
this conversion of section breaks to page breaks as a proofreading step in
the documentation that we've created recently.
So, please, please, just don't worry! Every software package has
its idiosyncracies. Open Book makes all quotes smart quotes that need to be
converted. Kurzweil can't recognize section breaks, so those of us who use
it have to check for those using Word. Word has ribbons that confuse and
makes screen readers choke. And, as you've seen, Fine Reader creates
section breaks instead of page breaks. They're all created by humans and
subject to our human falibility. We just work around the quirks and feel
smug when we figure out how to foil the software.
So, now you can feel smug with us, because you know what to expect.
Don't give up, or feel inadequate! This is an order! Just kidding,
but you get my ferventness, right?

Well, I guess my lesson is that not all page breaks are created equal. This
makes me very upset! Here I was using Word 2007, with the page break tool in
the "ribbon" <choke>, but it appears that they are all section breaks to the
best of my review at this point. I would have had no clue that the two could
have been considered equal until I inserted all grammar markers. The irony
is that a few of them are true page breaks, but most appear to be section
breaks. I cannot for the life of me understand why so many of them would be
section breaks instead of page breaks. I am using ABBYY FineReader 9.0
Professional Edition and as I said, Word 2007. Obviously now that I know to
go back and look, I will always have my formatting tools visible, but I'm
guessing the best bet is to withdraw my two submissions so that I can rework
them. I will be very upset if there is no easy way to ensure that a page
break really is a page break instead of a section break from the initial
scan, but I can find no preference within ABBYY FineReader to ensure they
come out right upon scanning. I have a hunch that it is probably because of
having the software split a flatbed to page scan, but that is just my hunch.
Like I said, for a perfectionist like me, this is very eerie taping to say
the least. I pride myself on excellent work, even when I am new at. Smiles.
Anyway, if those two books should be pulled, I will be glad to correct those
egregious errors...
