Actually HP 4C is very slow, compared to current EPSON 1660 and 3170.
If actinic amp is still in good shape, HP4C may still yield good images.
Estimate 2 to 3 times slower than EPSONS mentioned above.

Shelley,
If what your friend has is an hp4c skuzzy scanner he has a priceless
treasure and should guard it with his life! Those scanners are
legal-sized,
which are very hard to find since the more recently-produced ones are
designed for photo-scanning and not OCR. These old ones are fast, and they
make really good images for OCR. If he or you can get it set up it will be
worth the effort.
