If it is not quoted material as described by Soronel, and it is mostly at the beginning of chapters, my guess is it is to emphasize the first letter of such beginnings.

In quoted materials that style is used to indicate that the letter case has been changed. You will also sometimes see verb tenses fixed in the same way or other substitutions. If this is not appearing within quoted material I'm not sure what it would indicate. I just get rid of the brackets. I sure hope that's the right thing to do. I always figured it had something to do with weird fonts. Occasionally, I'm finding the first letter of a word surrounded by brackets. Is anyone aware of a reason for this? Is it something to do with scanning, or is there any reason that British text might use this or is it author style. I'm not sure if I should wipe them out, or leave them.
